Reforestation

Our next project for 2024 is to create an indigenous forest in Vellore, TN, India.

You can support it here!

History

When Green Sakthi began in 1998 (under the names of SAGAR & SAAP) in the rural village of Thirumalaikodi in Tamil Nadu, there was no electricity, nor public transport, the natural area was arid, neglected, dry and hot. The soil itself was compact and extremely difficult to work with. Because of the lack of trees, intense heat was radiating from surface areas due to the hot climate. There were only small shrubs in the area. The Kailasa Giri Hills that are now lush and fertile were then completely barren. The Green Sakthi project is presently reforesting and afforesting in Vellore, Tamil Nadu.

Tree Nursery

The reforestation projects start at our Tree Nursery… where we are growing and indigenous saplings to be planted throughout Tamil Nadu, South India.

Our tree nursery is managed by an all-women’s team, employing local women full time. We care for over 100 000 saplings in our tree nursery.

We have combined this program with Green Sakthi Club. We prepare the pits, compost and trees, we then invite students to plant the trees for 45 minutes. It is amazing to see the enthusiasm of the children! Our all-women’s team maintain the trees after planting (compost, mulching and watering).

Current Reforestation Effort:
